How Priva UV Irrigation Water Disinfection Systems Work

  • The UV disinfection system works by using active UV-C radiation to disinfect irrigation water. They have a wavelength of approximately 250 nanometers, and alter the DNA of micro-organisms, such as microbes, bacteria and moulds, thereby destroying them. UV-C light also kills viruses.
  • The permeability of UV-C light depends on the transmittance level of the water. The Vialux automatically calculates and operates at the optimum radiation level by continuously monitoring the water being treated. When water is cleaner, it saves energy.
  • For selective disinfection (microbes, bacteria and moulds) the UV-C intensity is 80 - 100mJ/cm, and for total disinfection (including viruses), the minimum UV-C dose is 250mJ/cm. These doses render pathogens completely inactive.
  • Dirt particles are always present in drain water. Particles suspended in the water cause shadows and may allow disease through. Before the Vialux process begins, the water must be filtered, using for example, a slow-acting sand filter. This removes any dirt particles, preventing any pathogens from passing through in their shadow. Powerful turbulence in the water current through the radiation chamber ensures that all the water is exposed to the UV radiation for the same amount of time, and at the same level of intensity.

Priva Vialux FreshpakHow is Priva UV different than Other UV Systems?

  • Unlike other UV systems that simply pump water past a UV lamp, the Priva Vialux measures the light transmission of the water and adjusts the radiation dose accordingly.
  • The system also cleans itself. Since it is a self-checking system, if the water is not properly treated, it will not let it through to the crop.

The high-pressure (HP/UV) system produces UV-C radiation between 200-300nm, whereas the low-pressure (LP/UV) system produces UV-C radiation almost exclusively at about 254nm. Priva Vialux provides your greenhouse irrigation system with smart technology for total disinfection and the purest recycling of your water supply.

* Note: UV treatment has a small effect on chelated nutrients. This effect can be overcome by careful selection of the chelate. Please contact us for more information.
